Congratulations to the Crew of the Samish

On April 27th, 2006 the Samish was transiting the central Puget Sound with a tow when the crew spotted what appeared to be a fishing vessel on fire in the vicinity of Richmond Beach near Edmonds, Washington.  The Samish immediately notified United States Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Center Puget Sound to activate a search and rescue response.

Realizing the severity of the situation, the crew of the Samish released their tow in a safe location and proceeded toward the stricken vessel to render assistance.  As the first vessel on scene to assist, the Samish identified the stricken vessel as the F/V Carroll M with six people aboard, and confirmed that all six of the Carroll M’s crew was accounted for.  The Samish then maneuvered along side the Carroll where the Samish crew went aboard the Carroll M to assist in firefighting efforts.  The Samish remained on scene to relay information to United States Coast Guard Sector Seattle Command Center, and her crew continued firefighting efforts until the fire was brought under control.

The quick response by the Samish and her crew, and their willingness to assist fellow mariners in distress, are directly responsible for the saving of the F/V Carroll M from further fire damage or total loss and for the safety of her crew.  The Samish’s crew was awarded the Meritorious Public Service Award on November 8, 2006 at the La Conner office.
